Educational Opportunities

United Jewish School

The United Jewish School (UJS) is the combined religious school for families who belong to Congregation Ahavas Israel and Temple Emanuel. Kids develop their Jewish identity, not just through learning from our teachers, but learning from each other and building community.

Judaism 101

This six month course is taught by the Rabbi and provides a broad overview of Judaism for anyone interested in exploring the faith and culture.  Students will learn about Jewish culture, holidays, Hebrew words, prayers, and everything else you’d ever need to know!  This class has historically included Jewish students, those who are partnered with or married to a Jewish person, those who are exploring Judaism with a curiosity toward conversion, and people from other faith traditions who are simply curious about what Judaism is. Contact info@grtemple.org for more information.

The Greta and Hy Berkowitz Learning Center

In addition to books of scholarly and general interest, Temple has an antique and rare book collection.  The Learning Center is also increasing its collection of audio and video tapes, and has a broad selection of newspapers and periodicals.  The library contains over 4,000 titles, a wide variety of books of Jewish content from adult fiction, adult biographies, youth and elementary books.

The learning center also has a wealth of reference materials for use onsite in our computer center.  We have nearly 100 programs ranging from biblical reference materials to teach yourself Hebrew to educational games.

Temple Emanuel has retained an open door policy to our Learning Center for our congregants as well as for the community at large.  The Greta and Hy Berkowitz Learning Center is open the same hours as the Temple office, and books may be checked out for a month at a time.

The Greta and Hy Berkowitz Learning Center welcomes volunteers to enter new books into the database, shelve books and help us expand our services. We also appreciate donations of appropriate books and periodicals.  Temple Emanuel also has historical archives available by appointment for academic research.
